After much thought, I’ve decided to post the entire short film of Toronto Alice online for all to see. Even though I’ve submitted to a bunch of festivals, I decided that wider exposure online was worth the risk of disqualifying the film from a handful of festivals.
If you enjoy, then please share widely. Thanks.
This is why I don’t take public transportation.
Now I don’t have the best eye for animation, but I believe that Alice’s body was animated differently when she is walking in the first scene than her movements on the bus.
This was quite charming and I hope it does well on the festival scene!
Yes, I used two distinct forms of animation in the film – although all of it was shot “under camera” using the technique of stop-motion. For the walking sequence, I used classical animation (where you draw each frame) to create 26 different images of Alice walking. These were printed out, cut out, coloured and shot against a chroma-key background. Then, the 26 different cutouts were looped, giving me the continuous walk. You can see a photo of the cutouts here: https://jenniferlinton.com/2014/06/24/walking-loop-for-toronto-alice/
The rest of the animation uses articulated paper puppets.
